Deacon John Croy has been Assistant to the Pastor at St. Lucy since his ordination in 2002.
Born in 1936, he was the son of Katherine and Theodore Croy. He grew up in West Carrollton, Ohio – just outside Dayton. He has a brother, Charles (deceased), and a sister, Judy.
After public elementary and high schools he attended Carnegie Mellon University, where he earned a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1958 and met the sweetheart of his life, Marianna Freese, an art major, whose home was in Roslyn, LI, NY. He did post-graduate work at Moore School of Graduate Studies, University of Pennsylvania.
He and Marianna were married in 1958. They have two daughters – Madeline (who lives in Pittsburgh), Catherine (in Connecticut) – and three sons – Theodore, John, (all on Aquidneck Island) and Fred (Richmond, RI) – and seven grandchildren.
Before retiring and moving back to RI in 1979, Deacon John held various engineering and management positions in Ohio, California, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
Facing retirement after a working career of developing computers and using them to solve problems, Deacon John sought a way to use the rest of his life to serve God in the Church. His pastor in Connecticut suggested he consider the diaconate. This he did in 1998. He entered training in the diocese of Providence and was ordained in 2002. A year later he earned an MA in Pastoral Ministry from Providence College.
