Helen L. Glynn, Music Director Helen Glynn became Music Director at St. Lucy in 1996. She came to Rhode Island with her Navy family in 1950 when her
father was assigned to USS Yellowstone (AD-27), whose home port was Newport.
After living in Navy housing on Goat Island for three years, her family moved to
Middletown in 1953. She attended mostly public schools
Although she has worked at Newport Hospital as a nurse (now for 32 years) she has always been interested in music. "I always loved to sing," she says, "it was in my blood." She didn’t realize how literally true this was until after her father died. She learned that he had in his younger days sung at a number of churches - sometimes two or three in a single Sunday. Helen herself belonged to the Music Ministry at St. Lucy, eventually taking over the director’s position. Meanwhile she was able to return to URI to study music, receiving her Master of Music in music education in 1997, focusing on vocal performance. Helen is married to Fred Glynn. They have two children - Matthew (at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield) and Rebecca (at URI). |
